Natural weight loss supplements have become the norm for people with problems with obesity. Dealing with weight issues can be quite daunting and not to mention stressful, which requires practicing judiciousness when it comes to choosing the right solution. In recent months, Saffron Extract has become quite a phenomenon in health circles particularly since it has been (and still is) widely endorsed by popular medial personalities such as Dr. Oz.
While there is very little doubt as to the efficacy of Saffron Extract not only as a weight loss aid but also as an all-around health supplement, there are certain concerns about its potential adverse effects. Those who are interested in giving this product a try should not only become familiar of its benefits but also know its side effects and how to avoid them as much as possible.
While this is quite rare, there have been documented cases of Saffron allergy and/or sensitivity. If a person is allergic to Saffron (the spice), it is highly likely that he/she will go into anaphylactic shock due to ingestion of the supplement. It is best to keep in mind that Saffron Extract is a concentrated version of the spice, so it is reasonable to assume that its effect is a lot potent than when used in cooking.
Allergic reaction symptoms include breaking out in hives, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and (in extremely rare cases) temporary paralysis of certain parts of the body or the entire body itself.
Negative Psychiatric Implications
Since Saffron affects the mood center of the brain, it also influences a person’s emotional well being., A number of studies have shown that Saffron is not ideal for individuals who suffer from Bipolar disorder and other psychological conditions that render a person unable to control his/her emotions. Bipolar disorder is a condition in which the patient can go from extremely elated (happy) to severely anxious and depressed without any warning at all.
Saffron influences the production of serotonin in the brain, which can adversely affect bipolar patients. The more serotonin produced, the more likely it is that they will crash harder and experience extreme depression as a result.
Taking too much Saffron Extract can result to stomach ache due to the reaction of digestive acids to chemical elements in the supplements. While the substances are all natural, it can prove detrimental to people with a history of peptic ulcers (chronic and/or acute), hyper-acidity, and irritable bowel syndrome. Having any of these and other related conditions does not necessarily preclude them from being able to take Saffron Extract but the consumption has to be controlled and monitored. In addition, if you are being treated for any of the conditions mentioned, it would be wise to consult the doctor prior to taking the supplement to prevent adverse drug interactions.
Other symptoms of digestive distress caused by Saffron Extract ingestion also include loose bowel movement or diarrhoea, fatty and/or bloody stool, constipation, and persistent flatulence.
Headaches, Dizziness, and Disorientation
Although there has yet to be a definitive study that confirms the correlation between taking Saffron Extract and the onset of headaches and accompanying dizziness and/or disorientation, there have been documented customer complaints. It appears that a small percentage of Saffron Extract users may experience these as well as other related symptoms such as nausea (may also be accompanied by vomiting), anxiety and hyperactivity.
Other Potential Saffron Extract Side Effects
*Appearance of rashes in one or several areas of the body (particularly the torso)*Unusually low or nonexistent appetite (Saffron Extract is an effective appetite suppressant, which is one of the reasons why it works wonderfully as a weight loss supplement)- In some cases, people taking Saffron Supplement may not feel hungry for a day or so, which can have adverse effects since they body still needs nourishment on a daily basis. It is important to consume enough food to keep your body healthy, even if you do not experience hunger for long stretches of time. *Dryness of the mouth *Shortness of breath*Profuse sweating
How to Prevent Adverse Effects
In most cases, the above-mentioned saffron extract side effects merely occur if/when the supplement is taken outside the limits of the recommended dosage. One of the most effective ways to avoid the side effects is to stick to the recommended daily dose and just let nature take its course. However, if you happen to be below 18 years or above 60 years of age, pregnant, lactating, or otherwise with a compromised health and/or taking medication for one or more illnesses, it is best to avoid using the product until you have consulted with your physician.
